SHILLONG: The Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma assured the House on Tuesday that efforts will be made to see that the industrial units set up in the State adhere to the employment policy as stipulated by the Government.
Replying to a question by Dr Donkupar Roy (UDP) on the employment in cement plants, the Chief Minister admitted that there are many industrial units in the State, including cement plants, which do not adhere to the employment policy laid down by the Government.
“If the units are not following the guidelines of employing certain percentage of locals , the matter will be taken up with the industrial units when they approach the Government for various subsidies”, Dr Sangma said.
To a supplementary question by Dr Roy, the Chief Minister said that the Government is in favour of formulating a separate policy relating to the employment of locals in all cement plants.
Dr Sangma informed that there are 885 Khasi-Jaintia, 66 Garo, 2 Hajong and 42 Rabha (all ST) people employed in the private cement factories in the State.
Mawmluh Cherra Cements Ltd may be commissioned by year end
Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma informed the Assembly on Tuesday that the new plant at the Mawmluh Cherra Cements Limited (MCCL), Sohra is expected to be commissioned by the end of this year.
While replying to a question raised by UDP MLA from Sohra, Titosstarwell Chyne during question hour, Dr Sangma said that a total amount of Rs 83.07 crore, Rs 43 crore for the new plant and Rs 40.07 crore for the existing plant, has been released to MCCL for the period from 2009 up to February 2013.
