NGOs meet to oppose 6th schedule amendment

 SHILLONG: In a meeting convened by the FKJGP and SOMALA and attended by over 10 organisations including the KSU, JSU, GSU, and CSWO among others, a decision was taken to oppose the move of the Central Government to amend the 6th schedule of the constitution without open consultations with the people of the State.The meeting urged the State Government and the district councils to stop the move on the part of the Central Government.”There are many objectionable amendments that are aimed at taking away the constitutional rights of the tribals and the meeting resolved to submit to the Government its detailed and clause by clause objections, the NGOs said.

They said that the Government should not forward any draft or give its approval to the proposed amendments without first consulting the people and getting their consent.
