TURA: A teenage girl returning home from a market in Era Aning village was attacked by three coal labourers and reportedly gang raped on Friday evening in Nangalbibra area of South Garo Hills.
The incident occurred when the fourteen-year-old girl had gone to purchase some items and was returning around 5:30 PM.
Three coal labourers caught hold of her in an isolated part of the road and dragged her to the nearby forest and committed the crime. Some villagers who were reportedly passing through the area heard her cries for help and alerted the village defense party and other inhabitants of the village.
They rushed to the site and managed to catch hold of two of the perpetrators while a third managed to escape. Angry villagers rained blows on them and later handed them over to Nangalbibra police.
The accused were identified as Makkam Marak (40) and Jengdin D Shira (29) while the absconding culprit was reportedly identified as one Jengdo (35).
All three had come from Bajengdoba region of
North Garo Hills to work as coal labourers in Nangalbibra, informed South Garo Hills Police.
With the Williamnagar gang rape incident still in news, Friday’s crime raises more questions about the safety of women in the region.
