GNLA militant walks overnight to surrender

 TURA: A GNLA militant abandoned his sentry post at a camp deep inside West Khasi Hills district and walked all through the night to reach Dobu in East Garo Hills to surrender before police officials on Tuesday morning.

The GNLA cadre identified as Tibat S Sangma alias Jeron and hailing from Makdoal village of Ampati in South West Garo Hills district arrived at Dobu and surrendered before Superintendent of Police JFK Marak in the presence of SWAT and CoBRA commando officials.

He handed over a 7.65 pistol with two magazines and seven rounds of ammunition along with two demand letter pads of the GNLA.

The militant joined the GNLA sometime last year and had undergone training in the Durama Hill range before being assigned a posting with the Khasi Hills command.

He revealed, at the time of his surrender, that living conditions were extremely difficult inside the camp and his eagerness to return to normal life prompted him to take the risk of fleeing while on guard duty at night.

Meanwhile, on Sunday evening, two GNLA cadres belonging to Reading’s group along with an overground female collaborator were arrested from Selsella region of West Garo Hills while travelling in an auto rickshaw to meet another cadre identified as Togak.

Security forces nabbed GNLA cadres Totil P Marak alias Still Momin (22) hailing from Bolkinggre village of Williamnagar and Joshua B Marak (20) resident of Orewak village in Baghmara along with a 19-year-old girl Domarangche of Selsella. There was no recovery of weapons from the trio.

Two GNLA cadres who were killed in an encounter with SWAT commandos at Koksi Nengset village of Songsak in East Garo Hills on Saturday have been identified by their relatives.

The deceased were identified as Sarbit Ch Marak alias Nangrepa of Rongpakgre village in South Garo Hills and Nanggan A Sangma alias Imra of Songsak Bolchugre village. The bodies were handed over to the families for burial, informed police.
