SHILLONG: Taking a step forward, the National People’s Party (NPP), formed by former Lok Sabha speaker PA Sangma, was officially launched in Assam on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference in Dudhnoi, Assam, former Rajya Sabha MP and NPP general secretary Thomas Sangma said that the new political party is aiming to start its work from the grass root level in the state.

Reacting to a query on the Rabha-Hasong issue, Sangma was categorical in his statement and asserted that they will respect the local sentiments irrespective of caste and creed.

The new party ad hoc committee president for Goalpara and Kamrup district, Digros D Shira, assured the that NPP will fight for the interest of the indigenous people.

It may be mentioned that the party was launched just few months before the Assembly election in Meghalaya. However, the party stumbled at its first election and succeeded in occupying only two seats in the House of sixty.
