TURA: Leaders of the Garo National Union (GNU) have asserted that it will boycott the Rabha Hasong Autono-mous Council election as the “RHAC Act, 1995 is uncon-stitutional and biased”.
After attending a meeting called by Assam’s Election Commissioner on April 23-24, GNU members said that the RHAC Act violates Articles 14, 15 and the preamble of the Indian Constitution -Equality of Status and Opportunity.
The GNU pointed out that Assam had accorded Autonomous Councils for many tribal communities in 1995 but the demand of the Garos has not been fulfilled.
The Union also informed that Garos of Goalpara and Kamrup districts will not participate in the election.
“However, the Garos of Assam will not obstruct the peaceful holding of the RHAC election in their areas,” the Union said.
The GNU also submitted a copy of the memorandum and constitution, which was earlier submitted to the Chief Minister of Assam and other Union Ministers in New Delhi, to the State Election Commissioner, who promised to take up the matter with the authorities.
