Editor,

The Khasi Student Union’s 24-hour ultimatum to the government for the release of its leaders accused of the April 4 violence is unacceptable. To date, the students union has neither owned up nor apologized for the hooliganism of its cadres which smeared the reputation of the Khasis as a progressive and peace-loving people. It reflects their moral cowardice and shallow ideals which resulted in total condemnation by all sections of society. Their efforts to cover up and play down the incidents did not meet with any success. Ultimately the Govt has done its job and arrested two of their lesser leaders. Now it must be left to the judicial system alone to hand out punishment if they are found to be guilty. No political interference or threat of agitation should be tolerated. Any attempt to dilute the process of law will be self-defeating for the Khasi Students Union.

 Curse of CMJ Degrees

 Editor,

We are a group of students holding graduate and post graduate degrees of CMJ University and are now looking for jobs. To our utter surprise we have come across the news in your esteemed daily (ST may 01, 2013) regarding CM] University and are shell-shocked. Through this letter we would like to ask the Hon’ble Governor of Meghalaya why he was silent all these years when the University was awarding Degrees to various students in various fields. Was this foul play on the part of CMJ University not evident to the Governor?

We have undergone different courses from this University and were told that they were all UGC approved. We believed that it was a bona-fide University established by a State Act and its degree is recognized all over India. So how has CMJ suddenly become a fake University? In that case, what is the fate of our certificates that we obtained from CMJ University? And what is the worth of our degrees?

I request the Governor to show us the way forward. If our degrees are not considered legitimate then our years of study and money is wasted and our career prospects are doomed.

Yours etc.,

 Slow Progress of PWD work

 Editor,

Through your esteemed daily, we the residents of Tura A’konggre locality close to DC’s office want to draw the attention of the District Administration over the slow progress of work with respect to the ongoing construction R.C.C.Bridge under PWD (North Division).Though A’konggre is located in the heart of Tura city and many prominent people live here it is sad that the timber bridge still exist only in this part of Tura area. Thanks to our Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr.Mukul Sangma who had sanctioned Rs.93:87 lakhs from the 13th Finance Commission for the same. But the fault lies in the allotment of contract work to inexperienced contractors who are holding responsible positions in the Congress party both at the district and Tura city level, instead of being handed to competent contractors who had also bid for the same work. We came to know that the work has been allotted to five active Congress workers. They do not some to the spot to supervise the work. There is no proper coordination among them. Several times we have complained to the contractors about the delay in their work but they have ignored those complaints. After six months there is no sign of progress. We urge the district administration and Executive Engineer PWD (North Division) to look into the problems of our locality and speed up the work before the monsoon season, in the larger interests of the general public.

Yours etc.,
