SHILLONG: The fallout of the CMJ University case in the wake of Meghalaya Governor RS Mooshahary’s letter to the said university has earned some of the severest reaction from the people of the state.

With the governor directing the University to withdraw the degrees awarded to students so far, those students who have already graduated from this university are at a great loss since some of them are already in job.

It has come to the notice that those candidates who are in job might face the heat if their degrees stand withdrawn as per the direction of the governor, leaving them non-graduates.

The governor has also directed the University not to undertake any fresh admissions of students till the appointment of a qualified chancellor since the present chancellor was appointed without the notice of the governor, who is the visitor of the University.

Many are of the view that there is clear cut aversion towards the congress MUA-II government which has allowed these bogus universities from mushrooming in the State without even thinking about the future of thousands of students.

CMJU students on the other hand said that when they took admission they were not sure that one day they would be ripped off their degrees awarded by this university.

Almost all students said that they went by the UGC recognition criteria that this university carries but they never ascertained the same from any authority.

It is also learnt that there is greater degree of unawareness among the student community and parents about what they should enquire into before taking admission in an educational institutions.

“The KSU has raised concern recently about the education fair being conducted by Lynchpin. But I believe before pointing fingers at other Universities in the country we should try and clean up our own dirt inside first,” said Elmendu Marak, student of a private university.

With demands galore for a CBI enquiry into the CMJU fraud case from the students, parents and residents of the State, because they are unsure about the overburdened CID will do a prompt investigation, there is also opinion flowing that no University can flourish in this manner without the backing of the local government.

They said that the State government has facilitated the formation of dozens of such universities without having a watchdog to see the functionalities of these universities.

While thanking the governor for initiating a gigantic step to unearth the grave anomalies not only in this university but also in the State government which has allowed them to set up their shops here without knowing their antecedents, this episode is also having its effect on the students and guardians of other private Universities in the State.
