TURA: The officer in charge of Garobadha police investigation centre (PIC) has been shunted out and a previously closed anti-dacoity camp has been reopened following Sunday’s incident in which criminals from Assam crossed over to commit a rape and dacoity on innocent villagers of Boldamgre village.
Sub-Inspector Jiban Sarkar, who was in charge of the Garobadha police centre overseeing security of the area, has been relieved of his duties on Sunday following the incident.
He has been replaced by former officer in charge of Tura police station Bitching Marak.
A previously closed anti-dacoity camp at nearby Rochonpara has been revived in the wake of the incident that took place at Boldamgre village, which is close to Jongkipara village where there have been several attempts in the past by Assam villagers to forcibly occupy land.
Both Boldamgre and Jongkipara villages, which fall under Selsella constituency on the Pipulbari road, are only a few hundred meters from the border with Assam.
The anti-dacoity camp located at Rochonpara during its operational days had acted as a security barrier against criminals from the neighbouring state. The camp was closed down ahead of this year’s state assembly elections and its armed personnel moved out for election duty to different parts of Garo Hills.
However, despite elections having been completed over two months ago no attempt was made by the government to re-establish the anti-dacoity camp despite the area being a hot bed for criminal activities by anti-social elements from Assam.
Failure by the State to provide sufficient funds to run the anti-dacoity camp is believed to have been the main reason for the delay.
With the damage done, authorities are now trying to make amends and a special police commando team has also been placed for operational duty in the affected area to boost the morale of the villagers and to put a check on criminal activities from across the border.
