SHILLONG: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has given a 30-day deadline to the State Government to comply with their pending demands including the up gradation of the Jowai Civil Hospital into a full fledge State Hospital.
Addressing newsmen here on Tuesday, JSU president Rikut Parein said that the Government has not taken any steps to upgrade the 100-bedded Jowai Civil Hospital since it’s inauguration in the early 80’s.
Stating that the Union has submitted as many as six representations to the Government regarding its demands, the JSU president said, “Due to the limited number of beds, the hospital authorities are not being able to provide accommodation to more patients many of whom lay in the corridors of the hospital.”
Parein pointed said that with the rise in the number of patients, the Government needs to take immediate measures for up gradation of the hospitals.
He also questioned the Government for failing to take steps to make the blood bank at Jowai, operational.
“Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma during his visit to Jowai Civil Hospital in September 2001 had assured that blood bank would be made functional within three months. Sadly, till date nothing has materialised,” he said.
Claiming that the necessary infrastructure is already in place, the JSU president said that the delay in starting the blood bank is due to the fact that the Government is yet to get necessary clearance from the concerned Union Ministry.
Parein also questioned the Government over the delay in making the Lalong Civil Hospital functional.
The JSU also met several legislators from Jaintia Hills asking for their support on the matters concerned.
He also informed that the union has submitted at least submitted six representations to the Government in this connection.
