SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Wednesday asserted that stringent action would be taken by the Government against CMJ University to send a strong message to all other private universities operating in the State to refrain from ‘illegal activities’.
The Chief Minister, however, made it clear that he had full faith in the State Crime Investigation Department and the case would be transferred to Central agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) only if it is deemed necessary.
Apart from the CMJ University, the Chief Minister also revealed that several other private universities in the State, including the Mahatma Gandhi University, which are under the scanner of the State Government.
According to Dr Sangma, the State Regulatory Board is examining the affairs of Mahatma Gandhi University and other private varsities to streamline their functioning.
Reacting to a query about the fate of hundreds of students who have been duped by the CMJ University, the Chief Minister said that the Government will examine the recommendations of the regulatory Board and accordingly take necessary action.
While narrating the history of the CMJ University, Dr Sangma said that few years back the State Government had sponsored engineering students who had opted to study in the Shillong Engineering College which is under the umbrella of the CMJ University, as the Government had not been able to invest in establishment of private universities in the State.
The Chief Minister, however, was all praise for Martin Luther Christian University, terming it as one of the examples of a good private institute.
