GNLA attacks construction company camp in W Khasi Hills

NONGSTOIN: Suspected GNLA militants on Thursday morning opened fired at the BSC C & C JV Company based at Swangre, West Khasi Hills leading to retaliation from police personal who were guarding the company premises.

As the police personnel opened retaliatory fire, the militant fled from the scene. Though no casualty or injury was reported on either side, search at the site yielded a live grenade, one SLR magazine and one AK magazine.

Providing details of the attack, West Khasi Hills SP Sylvester Nongtnger said that adequate security has been deployed in sensitive areas like Wahthre, Riangdem, Nongshram and Swangre and operation to nab the fleeing militant is on under the supervision of senior police officers.

Nongtnger informed that 18 police personnel had been deployed to guard the camp of the construction company located at Swangre, and the suspected GNLA militants, who numbered around ten, had no idea of the presence of the police personnel at the camp.

Reliable source have, meanwhile, informed that recently the GNLA served demand notes to the company headquarter located at Samanda in East Garo Hills where senior officials of the company are stationing.

However, the company refused to pay any money to the GNLA, which might have infuriated the militant group leading to the failed attack on the Swangre camp on Thursday, sources added.
