Awareness programme to stress on mining safety

 JOWAI: “Providing job to any person who has not attained 18 years of age is an offence”, and with an aim make people aware of this, the Jaintia Coal Miners and Dealer Association (JCMDA) on Saturday organized a mass awareness program at the Indoor Stadium EJH District Sports Association in East Jaintia Hills District.

Parliament Secretary, Justine Dkhar, Sutnga MLA, Hopeful Bamon, Deputy Commissioners along with the ADC and ADM besides other Officials from Directorate of Mineral Resources, Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board, Labour Department, Rangbah shnongs, local coal traders, mine owners attended the program.

MDCs including Hambertus Nongtdu and Richard Singh Lyngdoh were also present on the awareness program.

Speakers who spokes on the occasion highlighted the issues of Child Labour in Coalmines and Mine safety.

The EJH Deputy Commissioner, Abhishek Bhagotia informed that the central and the State government are very much concerned on the two key issues- Child Labour and Safety of coal miners.

The Deputy Commissioner stressed upon the safety of labourers in coalmines. He said, accidents in coalmines have been reported on a regular basis and it is a matter of concern.

He called upon mines owners to see that mining activities be improved so that accidental death in the coal mine can be prevented.

“We should not stop coal mining but we should take measures to prevent damage to the environment”, Justine Dkhar said.
