SHILLONG: Though Sohra is known world wide for its breathtaking sceneries and pleasing atmosphere, two historical pine trees in Sohra makes it an even more historic tourist spot in the country.
The two pine trees at the circuit house of Sohra were planted by the former Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharl Nehru and his daughter Indira Gandhi during their visit to Sohra in August 1952.
Civil Sub Divisional Officer Sohra, CVD Diengdoh told The Shillong Times that the two pine tress was planted when Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru along Indira Gandhi visited Sohra to lay the foundation stone of Rama Krishna Mission.
The circuit House staff has been maintaining both trees since last fifty years and they are committed to preserve it even in future.
A signboard has also been put beneath the tree to inform people about the historical importance of two trees which has now turned into long and beautiful trees.
“We also show it to VIP dignitaries and guests who visit the circuit house,” he added.
Reacting to a query, the official believed that Sohra had the capacity to promote cultural heritage tourism there as the place has many historical landmarks in and around.
The first British headquarter was there and there is an old church besides Thomas Jones Memorial school and even some British cemeteries.
Tourists are of the view that a great deal of promotion needs to be initiated on part of the Government to make these trees known to a larger audience.
