SHILLONG: The appointment of retired Meghalaya police chief Anil Pradhan as Special Rapporteur of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was questioned by the Civil Society Women’s Organization (CSWO) who demanded his removal while citing his appointment as an insult to the north east.

“We were shocked to find out that Pradhan has been appointed as the special Rapporteur for the north East by the NHRC’, CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said adding that it is like an insult to the north east when his name which had figured after the infamous Shillong jail break of May 31,2009 is yet to be cleared.

Kharshiing also alleged that it was also during his tenure as IG Prisons that gang leader of Shillong jail break Full Moon Dhar got free access to lakhs of rupees which helped facilitate the sensational jailbreak.

As per the NHRC website, Pradhan has been appointed as Special Rapporteur, North East Zone, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim and Tripura.

“We are certain that the delay by the government to make public the findings of the inquiry commission was done so to help him (Pradhan) to get the post as special Rapporteur”, Kharshiing said adding that the CSWO will inform the NHRC about the real facts and at the same time, demand Pradhan’s removal.
