SHILLONG: Calling for an immediate global intervention to end the crisis inside Tibet, the Tibetan Parliament In Exile (TPIE) on Monday sought the support of the Union government and State governments including Meghalaya while launching the eighth and final leg of the ‘All India Parliamentary Lobby Campaign’ in Shillong.

“The delegates urged India to engage in urgent diplomatic actions pressurizing the Chinese Government on various fronts,” TPIE member Dhardon Sharling told reporters here on Monday.

The delegation appealed the Indian leaders for substantial and public expressions of solidarity and support amid the unprecedented spate of self-immolations by Tibetans inside Tibet and the subsequent deepening crackdown by Chinese government, Sharling said.

“The steadfast support of the Indian Government and its people towards the Tibetan people is significant,” she said adding that a number of governments around the world have openly pressured the Chinese government on current crises in Tibet.

According to her, the policies of China to annihilate the identity of Tibet as a nation and its people in the form of its religion, culture, language and customs during the last 60 years have resulted in many protests and agitations.

“The Tibetans inside Tibet since the year 2009 has resorted to a new form of non-violent protests making a clarion call for freedom inside Tibet and return of His Holiness Dalai Lama into Tibet”, Sharling added.

Stating that Tibet is China’s failure, she said, “Though China claims itself to be powerful but they have not been successful in controlling the minds of the people.”

The TPIE member further informed that over nine round meetings were held with the Chinese from 2002 and 2010 seeking for dialogue on the issue which the Chinese government however failed reconciliation.

Though the response is a disappointment, she however stated that TPIE are still looking forward and are willing for dialogue for bringing mutual settlement.

The final leg of the campaign kick-started in the city with a Mass Solidarity Candlelight Vigil led by members of TPIE besides a series of successful lobbying campaign in West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh.
