SHILLONG: Opposition to the State Government’s plans of acquiring 2000 acres of land in New Shillong Township (NST) seems to be growing with the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) joining other NGOs in voicing their opposition to the proposal.
Earlier NGOs like the KSU and the CSWO had opposed the Government’s move of acquiring the land to de-congest Shillong city, claiming that the move would encourage influx.
While stating that the process of land acquisition cannot happen without the collusion of traditional heads, the HNYF said that most of the land belonging to the Raid or Kur (clan) are sold by few vested interests without the knowledge of all the residents.
“This is a violation of our tradition,” the HNYF said, while urging the clan leaders not to be exploited by selling away their land at throw away prices.
According to the HNYF, the proposal to acquire additional land in NST would invite influx in the State.
The HNYF also informed that they would lead a delegation to the KHADC to seek clarification on why the Council has remained silent on the issue.
“As a pressure group we will not allow the Government to proceed with this land acquisition,” the HNYF added.
