SHILLONG: Several NGOs have condemned the rape of two sisters at Ampati by the sub inspector of Ampati police station.

CSWO President Agnes Kharshiing said that the incident shows the abuse of power by the men in uniform. Kharshiing also said that action should be taken against the police personnel involved in helping the OC to escape.

The CSWO, however, demanded immediate withdrawal of suspension order against another police official, Pyniarborlang Lyansiang. Several Garo Hills based NGOs including ASWA, AYWO and GSU also said that though FIRs were filed by Nokma and the father of victims separately, the police did not take action against the accused policeman.

They also decided to organize a dawn to dusk Non-Co-operation Movement in entire South-West Garo Hills district on June 6 and 7 to protest against the rise in cases of rape against women and girls in the district.

The NGOs also pointed out that police are yet to arrest the dacoits who assaulted several old people and raped a minor girl at Jongipara Boldamgre in the district. Police are also yet to make any break through regarding the incident of murder of a teacher identified as Mamuni Ch Marak in South West Garo Hills.
