SHILLONG: The Meghalaya People’s Front (MPF) will not be part of any Assembly Committees until Assembly Speaker Abu Taher Mondal restores back ‘the convention of the House under which members of the opposition and ruling parties share responsibilities for the committees.’
This was informed by MPF spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh after a meeting here on Wednesday
evening.
“The post of the chairmen of the various Assembly Committees should be shared by both the members of the ruling and opposition. This convention has been there since the inception of the House,” Lyngdoh said while adding that the Assembly committees belong to the Legislature and the “Assembly Speaker must realize that House Committees are not Government Committees where only members from the ruling are nominated.”
He also asserted that only senior members with experience should be allowed to head the committees.
Deteriorating law and order situation in Garo Hills
Lyngdoh said that the MPF is seriously disturbed by the deteriorating law and order situation in Garo Hills. Commenting on the recent rape of minors by a police official, Lyngdoh said such acts will erode the faith of the people on the police force.
