SHILLONG: Assam Police on Saturday rescued two girls from Meghalaya when they were reportedly being trafficked outside the State.

The girls, aged 13 and 14 years respectively, informed The Shillong Times over phone from Dispur police station that they wanted to go to Bangladesh to meet their sister. As they did not know how to go to Bangladesh, one person offered to help them on their way to Bangladesh.

According to Assam Police, the two girls were intercepted by police at the Sixth Mile flyover in Guwahati, but some persons who were with the girls, managed to flee from the scene.

The Assam Police also informed that they would hand over the girls to Childline, Guwahati, for necessary action.

Meanwhile, in a twist to the case, there are reports that the girls went missing from Tyrshiang in Jaintia Hills and their relatives had lodged an FIR at Ummulong outpost and also at Jowai police station recently.

It was reported that a carpenter had taken one of the girls last week to Dhubri, but she was brought back by the relatives.

However, the girl along with her friend again accompanied the carpenter to Guwahati.

One LK Handique, a human rights activist based in Assam, found the two minor girls at 6th mile near GNRC on Saturday and contacted his friend in Shillong who spoke to one of the girls over phone and subsequently, he contacted CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing.

Kharshiing, after informing Meghalaya Police of the matter, contacted NGOs from Jaintia Hills.

A police team from Ummulong along with the relatives of the girls will go to Guwahati to bring back the girls.
