Landslides, lightening wreak havoc

Kohima: The Deputy Commissioner of Mon Angau I Thou along with the district administrative official, the Deputy Commandant of Village Guard of Mon and President of the Konyak Union visited Chaosa village on Friday and inspected the affected areas damaged by several landslides and a house struck by lightning.

According to official report today, the Chaosa Village Council Chairman S. Ponwang said numerous landslides triggered by heavy down pour accompanied by storm damaged houses and crops in the field on June 4.

He informed the visiting official that one house was completely gutted down by lightning on that fateful day. Altogether 95 families were affected by the calamity, he added.

Thou shared her solidarity with the people of Chaosa and termed the incident as catastrophe. she said it was surprising to learn that several landslides have occurred despite the village being covered with green forest. She also appealed to the people to take a strong resolution to convert all thatch houses with CGI roofing.

Informing that Village Development Board was established in the year 1980 and expressed wonder why majority of the villages in the district was still constructing thatch houses. Admiring the greenery of the village with unique scenery, she encouraged the villagers to make Chaosa a tourist attraction spot.

Deputy Commissioner also verified the spot affected by the calamity and interacted with the affected families. She as an immediate relief, distributed blankets, rice and cash to the affected families.
