SHILLONG: The UDP and its coalition partners have expressed unhappiness over the delay by Assembly Speaker Abu Taher Mondal to recognize the Meghalaya People’s Front (MPF) as the official Opposition alliance.

UDP sources on Tuesday informed that Mondal had assured that he would accord recognition to the MPF as the official Opposition alliance once he returned from his London trip “But sadly the Assembly Speaker has failed to comply with his commitment even after weeks of his return from the foreign trip,” party sources said.

When contacted, UDP president Dr Donkupar Roy said that he had tried to meet the Assembly Speaker to discuss the matter but he was not in station.

“I would try again to meet him in the coming days,” Dr Roy said.

It may be mentioned that the MPF was not accorded recognition since the UDP with eight members in the House fell short of two seats as 10 members (one-sixth of the total strength of the House) are required for recognition of the Opposition alliance and for election of the Leader of Opposition from the same party.
