Guwahati: Assam will be the focus of an event at the Nehru Centre, cultural Wing of the High Commission of India in London.

Being organised in partnership with the Tea Board of India, the flagship event on Assam, ‘The Gateway of India’s North-East’, will be held on June 14.

India Tea Board is to promote and offer Assam Tea at the premises.

This initiative has been taken by Rini Kakati, NRI Assam co-ordinator for UK, a statement said here.

The summit will address key issues related to the overall socio-economic development of NE, which, despite being a region with tremendous economic potential, has not been able to grow as expected and has literally remained untapped.

The topic for the panel discussion would be ‘The role of India’s North-East in Global Development’ and will witness the coming together of a number of top UK and Indian journalists.

The panelists will be led by Humphrey Hawksley, BBC Foreign correspondent, author and commentator on world affairs, Amit Roy (President of the Indian Journalists’ Association), Telegraph India & Eastern Eye, Vijay Mehta, Chair of Uniting for Peace and Founding Trustee of Fortune Forum Charity.

The meeting will be chaired by Rita Payne, President, Commonwealth Journalists Association (UK branch).

The interactive session will be graced by Simon Hughes, the Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats and Sukhdev Singh Sidhu, Minister Co-ordination, UK India High Commission. (UNI)
