Heat wave claims 20 lives in Assam

Guwahati: A dry hot spell continued in Assam as the death toll in heat stroke and other hot weather condition-related symptoms rose to nearly 20 across the state.

With the state witnessing another dry day and temperatures hovering near 40 degree Celsius in many parts, the weatherman had little words of consolation for the people as forecast for the next two days indicate similar weather indications.

After at least six deaths were reported from various parts of the state till Wednesday in heat stroke or sun stroke, local reports said another 10 people have died of similar symptoms on Thursday.

While four persons have reportedly died of heat stroke in Goalpara district alone, two others have died in Golaghat and the rest of the deaths have been reported from other districts across the state.

Among the casualties is a woman in Guwahati, who collapsed and died at a busy market area this afternoon, taking the toll to three in as many days in the city.

Guwahati had witnessed the hottest ever June day yesterday with temperature touching 38.8 degree Celsius, with the same temperature recorded as early as at 0830 hours this morning also, as per the Regional Meteorological Department website. (UNI)
