Student body accused of threat and intimidation against college staff

TURA: The Tura Government College Students’ Union (TGCSU) which had been in the forefront of a protest alleging non-performance of official duties by the college official staff now stands accused of issuing threats and intimidation and preventing students from taking part in the ongoing IGNOU college examinations.

The Non-Teaching staff of the Tura Government College whose members stopped attending morning duties for want of time has taken strong exception to the allegations leveled by the college students’ body.

The college staff has termed the TGCSU allegations of not attending to their duties as false and baseless.

“There are many reasons why the non-teaching staff of the college stopped attending morning duties and stopped working for morning shift students,” stated the college office staff.

They pointed out that the office staff are engaged in morning duty from 6:30 AM to 9 AM and thus not possible to be at their desk at the stroke of 10 AM for the following day shift as demanded by the college students’ union.

“We have to work in the morning, the day time (normal working time), overtime and all incomplete works have to be taken home so as to be completed on time. Even on Saturdays we cannot enjoy our weekend holidays,” lamented the office staff.

The TGCSU has been accused of physically assaulting a grave IV staff and verbally abusing others during the ongoing agitation by the body. According to the non-teaching staff the TGCSU refused to allow students from attending the ongoing IGNOU examinations being conducted at the college centre and forced them to return home.

“These were students who could not afford regular courses and had joined IGNOU but the TGCSU members have deprived them of their opportunities by not allowing them to write their exams. These acts have deeply saddened and hurt our sentiments,” complained the non-teaching staff. Frequent interference in the functioning of the office by TGCSU members has also been leveled by the non-teaching staff.

“They tried to take scholarship cheques of other students by forging signatures and also tried to take documents of others without any authorization, collect admission forms, examination forms, registration forms of students and forcibly submit the same in the office,” stated the non-teaching staff while adding that many of the collected forms were incomplete and without sufficient documents further creating problems in the admission process.

“Inspite of these, the office staff, at the request of the principal started receing admission forms of morning shift from Monday (June 10th) but the TGCSU started office picketing the next day,” clarified the college non-teaching staff.

They accused the college union of depriving other students from taking admission due to the picketing and tried to blame the non-teaching staff for it.
