SHILLONG: The KSU on Thursday questioned the delay of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to enquire into the anomalies in the CMJ University in the State despite the same being highlighted for a month time now.
Welcoming the decision of the UGC to form an expert committee to enquire into the CMJ University’s scam, the KSU however, felt that the UGC should have acted a bit sooner keeping in mind the career of the students of this university.
As per the information gathered by the KSU, the UGC had inspected as many as 20 private universities in New Delhi within a month, however, the UGC failed to do the same in the State of Meghalaya having only 7 private universities.
“Is this discrimination against the people of the State and the region as a whole?” KSU Education secretary Donald Thabah questioned, and at the same time, called upon the UGC to inspect all the private universities in the state and not only CMJ University.
Moreover, the Union has also questioned that adamant attitude of the regional office of the UGC based in Guwahati in this respect stating instead of providing specific information when sought by the affected students of this university, the authorities failed to provide them with the information and instead troubled them by asking them to seek the same from Delhi.
“If the office in Guwahati has no role to play or could not provide the required information then what is the use having a centre there when the same could not provide any service to the people of the region,” Thabah added.
The KSU has stated that if the UGC delayed in conducting inspections of all the private universities in the State, they will be forced to take their own course of action to tackle the establishment of such universities.
