SHILLONG: Laitkroh independent MDC Carmel Sohtun has opposed the claim of the Tourism department on the huge chunk of land near Lum Shyllong (Shillong Peak) where the inspection bungalow was previously located.

“As per the traditional land custom, the land is reverted back to the local traditional bodies who are custodians if anybody decides to abandon the place. The latest which I am referring to is about the land which is under the custody of Hima Mylliem,” Sohtun said while moving a motion questioning this claim by the Tourism department during the ongoing Council Summer Session here on Wednesday.

He said that the Tourism department is falsely claiming ownership of over 3298 acres of land which actually belongs to the Himas.

“It is illogical for the Government to claim the land which they abandoned for many years,” Sohtun said.

According to him, the Hima Mylliem has also taken cognizance of this matter.

He urged upon the Executive Committee (EC) to pursue the matter with the Government.

Laitkroh independent MDC also submitted the land documents to the Council to show that the land belongs to Hima Mylliem.

In reply, Executive Member in charge Forest has assured that the Executive Committee (EC) would take look into the matter.
