SHILLONG: KHADC Executive Member in charge of Education, Grace Mary Kharpuri on Wednesday told the House that efforts would be made to ensure that the Khasi language is taught in all the educational institutions.

While replying to a motion moved by Mawkhar MDC James B Basaiawmoit on the Non inclusion of Khasi language in educational institutions during the second day of the Council Summer Session, Kharpuri said that the Khasi language should be a compulsory subject in the educational institutions.

She informed that the House that Khasi language is being included as one of the subjects in the syllabus of Indian Certificate of Secondary Education and not in the Central Board of School Education.

Earlier, moving the motion, Basaiawmoit said that it was disheartening to know the lack of interest by the community towards its own language and many families encouraged their children to study Alternative English instead of Khasi.

“Many of the tribal students have been deprived the opportunity to study the Khasi language in their schools, as these educational institutions have failed to include the Khasi language as one of the subjects,” he said, adding that the Khasi language should be studied in all the educational institutions of the State.

Supporting the motion, Jaiaw KHNCM MDC Adelbert Nongrum said the Khasi language could have been taught at the Primary School Level, but this is not possible now because the power to impart Primary Education by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council was taken away by the State Government.
