SHILLONG: Home Minister Roshan Warjri has suggested the need to have a team of police personnel exclusively for investigation of rape cases.
“I have made a suggestion to the police higher ups to look into the formation of two teams of police personnel numbering around 10 to 15 to be appointed both in Shillong and Tura on a pilot basis to investigate the rape cases.
There are several rape cases pending proper investigation as the policemen have to concentrate on law and order duty and also on investigation of cases.
According to the Home Minister, separate team of policemen to be headed by a senior police official will help speed up trial of pending rape cases.
The Home Department has also decided to appoint three senior scientific assistants in the forensic department on contract basis to assist the personnel of the department in handling crime.
Disciplinary action: The Home Minister said that departmental proceedings will be drawn against several policemen, who are allegedly involved in the crime against women.
There were several cases of police men allegedly involving crime against women and the Home department is already on the job of taking disciplinary action.
Warjri said that action against police officer SN Roy, who is also accused in the rape of a minor girl is in the final stage.
“We do not want to protect any one and we view crime against women as a very serious offence”, she added.
