President urges for quality education

 Agartala: President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday called upon academicians to improve the standard of education especially in the field of higher education.

It feels really bad when not a single University in the county finds place in the world’s top 200 Varsities, he said while addressing the 10th convocation of Tripura Central University at Surajamaninagar, km from the capital town.

Mukherjee said the country, indeed, made progress in the physician infrastructures – from eight IITs to 16 elite engineering institutes within few years. “The number of NIT has been increased to 33 while the number of Central University stands at 43. In spite of the availability of facilities, the standard of higher education is not upto the mark”, he pointed out.

Recalling the country’s glorious past, Mukherjee said the country had dominated in the field of higher education for long time. “Students from the glove used to come India for higher study. Universities like Nalanda, Taksila and Sombihar have become attractive locations for higher education”, he said.

Calling upon academicians to improve the quality of the higher education system, the President said, “The country has not many talents. What’s need of the hour is to work hard for attaining excellence in the higher education”, he said.

Nothing that the quality of education must be improved, Mukherjee who arrived here on a two-day visit, said the time has ripe to go for self introspection. “Honesty and discipline in life play key role in attaining goal. The graduating students must strive for delivering best”, he said.

The President, in his speech also exhorted students to pay back what they have achieved from the varsity. “You need to be a perfect human being besides acquiring knowledge and skills”, he added.

Besides, the President, Governor Devananda Konwar, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and Vice Chancellor Prof Anjan Kumar Ghosh were remained present in the convocation programme. Mukherjee is scheduled to inaugurate the first unit of Northeast’s biggest power plant- Palatana power project on Friday.
