SHILLONG: The UDP is looking for tie up with all regional parties including the HSPDP to have a consensus candidate for the Shillong Parliamentary seats in the upcoming 2014 Lok Sabha election.
“We would prefer to have a consensus candidate of all regional parties to have a strong prospect of winning the Shillong Parliamentary seats,” UDP spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh told reporters here on Monday.
As of now, the names of former Home Minister Robert G. Lyngdoh and that of incumbent legislator Paul Lyngdoh have emerged as probable candidates of the United Democratic Party (UDP) for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
The Lok Sabha polls are likely to be held in May next year, and currently, Congress leader Vincent H. Pala is representing the Shillong parliamentary seat.
“We are likely to announce the party candidate within August,” Lyngdoh said.
Meanwhile, the eight UDP legislators who met here this evening, decided to tour the entire State in a bid to revamp the party at the grassroots level.
“The party leaders will start visiting the districts across the State from next month onwards,” Lyngdoh said while also informing that the party will be revived at the grassroots level before the party’s general council meets in August.
At the general council, party workers will elect the new members of the central executive committee, Lyngdoh informed.
