NEW DELHI: NPP supremo Purno Sangma and his daughter Ms Agatha Sangma have sought the Centre’s intervention to bring prevailing situation in Garo Hills under control.

The father-daughter duo are leaving for the State on Wednesday for an on-the-spot study of the situation.

“The situation is taking an ugly communal colour and there could be possible backlash in the sensitive areas,” Agatha, meanwhile, said in a letter to the Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde. The Tura MP also pointed out that supply of essential commodities to the Garo Hills has been stopped due to violence. Even some of the petrol pumps have run dry. It will create immense trouble for the people leaving in the bordering areas, she added in her letter a copy of which was given to the Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee has cancelled its executive committee meeting slated for Wednesday in view of the prevailing situation in the Garo Hills., party sources said on Tuesday.

The meeting, which was supposed to be attended by the newly-appointed AICC general secretary in-charge of Meghalaya Luizinho Falerio and Secretary Dr Vijay Laxmi Sahoo, will take place on some other date, it added.
