SHILLONG: The Executive Committee (EC) of KHADC will examine the various provisions of the Sixth Schedule before bringing an amendment to Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Council) Rules, 1951 to debar the Garos from taking part in the council’s election.

Informing this here on Wednesday, the CEM Pynshngaiñ N Syiem said, “We do not know if there is any mention in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution which would allow the Council to bring such an amendment.”

Stating that the matter is sensitive one, the KHADC CEM said the EC would have to study laws pertaining to the issue to ensure that “any decision taken by the Council does not backfire.” He, however, maintained members were free to put forward their views on any matter. “But it is for EC to examine the pros and cons of the demand made by such members,” Syiem added.

Earlier, KHNAM MDC Adelberth Nongrum (Jaiaw) said that he would stick to his demand to debar the Garo population residing in Khasi Hills region from taking part in the KHADC elections.

The breakaway faction of the Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC-B) has criticised Nongrum for making such a demand.
