Agartala: Additional District Court of West Tripura has convicted a superintendent of police (SP) life term for dereliction of duty, suppression of an official report, destruction of evidence and illegally favouring a person involved in corruption.

This is for the first time in Tripura that a SP rank police officer was convicted under sections 409, 201 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 13 (II) of Prevention of Corruption Act.

The court has sent him to jail on Wednesday but the final verdict will be delivered on Thursday.

The convicted Manik Lal Mazumder, is now posted as SP (headquarters).Earlier he had been the Additional SP-Crime Investigation Department (CID).

When the court announced the decision yesterday, Mazumder was present in the court accompanied by his wife and children, and escorted by four security guards.

He was taken to jail immediately after the court decision.

While working as Additional SP (CID) in 1998, Mazumder had been entrusted with the responsibility for investigating a serious case of corruption against the then superintendent in the food department Aparna Das who had forged the signature of her senior colleague to illegally renew licenses.

While investigating the case Mazumder developed a relationship with Aparna and hid all the papers recovered from food department office implicating Aparna in the case.

Despite specific orders from the then district and sessions judge Swapan Das, Mazumder neither submitted the case diary nor any relevant paper on his findings in the court.

Finally a case had been registered with West Agartala police station in 2009 against Mr Mazumder upon Justice Swapan Das’ order. After four years of trial additional district and sessions Judge Kripankur Chakraborty found Mazumder guilty on Tuesday. (UNI)
