SHILLONG: The change of guard in Raj Bhawan is unlikely to affect the ongoing probe into alleged irregularities committed by the Chandra Mohan Jha (CMJ) University.

It was the outgoing Governor RS Mooshahary, who as the Visitor of this University, had lodged a police complaint about alleged irregularities and had even prohibited any fresh admission in the university.

Though Mooshahary’s tenure has come to an end and a governor is taking over charge, the action against the university would continue, sources said on Tuesday.

“Incumbent Governor has passed orders and made representations so steps will have to be taken against this private university,” sources said.

“The case has become so high-profile that it would not be possible to dump it in dustbin,” Mooshahary said, a day after President Pranab Mukherjee announced Dr Krishan Kant Paul as the next occupant of Raj Bhavan in Shillong.

Mooshahary recently had asked the State Government to consider the closure of the University in accordance with Section 48 of the CMJ University Act, 2009.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), investigating the alleged lapses of CMJ University, unearthed a number of irregularities in the university’s functioning. It arrested the varsity’s registrar, Mrinal Kanti Deb, deputy registrar Premlal Rai, university director Manjeet Kaur, and human resource manager Juban Kharpuri on charges of fraud and cheating.

However, the CID sleuths have not been able to arrest varsity chancellor Chandra Mohan Jha, as he has gone into hiding ever since Mooshahary exposed the irregularities of the varsity.

The outgoing Governor on Tuesday hoped that the case would reach its logical end.

He informed that he had already served three notices to the state government on the matter.

Exuding confidence on the CID, the outgoing Governor said the absconding chancellor of the university CM Jha should traced. Mooshahary said “Considering the complexity of the case and with limited resources that the state police have, they are facing some problems but they are doing their best.”
