NONGSTOIN: A public meeting was held in Rambrai market area on Tuesday in protest against the proposed dam on the Khri river in West Khasi Hills district.

Hundreds of local residents gathered at the meeting called by the HANM which was also attended by members of the KSU and FKJGP Rambrai units.

Pyrshong Jyrwa, KSU president Rambrai unit, was of the view that the proposed dam would displace around 5000 people in several villages. He questioned the Government as to where it intended to rehabilitate these villagers. He added that it was the duty of the KHADC members to protect the land and interests of the Khasi people.

HANM president Lamphrang Kharbani appealed to all NGOs of Khasi and Jaintia Hills to unite and fight against the construction of the proposed dam. Lamphrang also accused the Assam Government for their two-pronged strategy of planning to take away the land of Meghalaya by building the dam.

Kharbani also reminded that Tuesday was the first anniversary of the Jirang incident, where members of the HANM had set on fire a police check post at Jirang.

The meeting resolved to submit a memorandum to the State Government and the KHADC to oppose the construction of the proposed dam on the Khri.
