SHILLONG: Police on Friday arrested an Enforcement official of Shillong DTO Office after being caught red-handed while accepting bribe of Rs 5,000 from a transporter.

According to police, Deibor Mitre Kyndiah, an Enforcement Checker of Shillong DTO Office, had initially demanded Rs 10,000 from the transporter for issuing an assurance letter pertaining to his road permit. After negotiation, the amount was reduced to Rs 5,000, police said.

Acting on an FIR filed by the transporter, police laid a trap and caught Kyndiah red handed with the money.

An additional amount of Rs 21,000 was seized from him. Kyndiah will be produced in court on Saturday, a senior police official said.

“It is an open secret that such illegal things are taking place in the DTO office,” the senior police official said while urging the public to come forward to inform police if any government official demands bribe to get their work done.
