Building under demolition collapses in Delhi, one dead

New Delhi: A four-storey residential building that was being demolished collapsed early on Saturday morning in Jafrabad area of northeast Delhi, leaving one person dead and 15 injured, police said.

“The collapse happened at 2.05 a.m. One person died and 15 received minor injuries,” a police official said. “The victims were labourers. They were engaged in the building’s demolition when it collapsed. Fifteen labourers were rescued from the site, while one man named Furkan died,” the police official added. The injured people were taken to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, from where they were discharged after first aid. “Twelve fire ambulances rushed to the spot on receiving a distress call. All the victims were evacuated from the building, which occupied a 300 square yard area,” a fire official said. The police official refused to divulge the name of the owner of the building. (IANS)

Bihar gets Rs.4,130 crore

for rural development

Patna: Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh Saturday announced a special package of Rs.4,130 crore for rural development in Bihar. “The central government will provide this amount for rural development in Bihar,” Jairam Ramesh told reporters here. The minister is on a two-day visit to the state to take stock of rural development projects. “It is the biggest financial package for rural development in Bihar in the last 12 years,” Jairam Ramesh said. He also announced that the below poverty line (BPL) quota in allotment of houses under the social welfare programme Indira Awas Yojna would end from April 1 next year. (IANS)

Amarnath pilgrim dies of heart attack

Srinagar: A 38-year-old pilgrim died of cardiac arrest after paying obeisance at the 3,880 metre high holy cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir Himalayas, taking the death toll in the ongoing yatra to three, officials said on Saturday. Satinder Soni, a resident of Ludhiana in Punjab, breathed his last at Brarimarg while returning to Baltal base camp from the cave shrine last evening, the officials said. His death raised the number of pilgrims who died during the ongoing yatra to three. The 55-day yatra commenced from the twin routes of Pahalgam in Anantnag district and Baltal in Ganderbal district on June 28 and so far over 1.15 lakh pilgrims had visited the cave shrine housing the naturally formed ice stalagmite known as “Shivlingam”. Meanwhile, a fresh batch of 4,824 yatris left Nunwan base camp to pay obeisance at the cave along the traditional 45-km Pahalgam-cave route, while 1,027 pilgrims proceeded towards the cave from the shortest 16-km Baltal side this morning, the officials added. Test run of Jaipur Metro coaches

Jaipur: Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation has commenced dynamic test of metro coaches on a half km long track in Mansarover depot here. The first test was conducted under the supervision of technical experts last evening on the half km test track and will continue for almost 40 days to check different systems of the coaches, CMD Jaipur Metro Nihal Chand Goel said. After the initial testing, the coaches of the first train, which arrived here in May from Bangalore, will be taken on the main track. The exercise is a part of security and safety checks and other coaches will also undergo similar measures, he said. Jaipur Metro, whose trains will run from Mansarover to Chandpole under phase I, is likely to take at least two more months to roll out. (PTI)

ASI booked for raping woman

Jind (Har): A case was on Saturday filed against an assistant sub-inspector of Haryana police for allegedly raping a 40-year-old woman for last seven years on the pretext of marriage here, a senior police official said. The woman, a divorcee and a resident of Raghu colony area here, also alleged that ASI Balraj had duped her to the tune of Rs four lakh on the pretext of purchasing a plot in her name. Rohtak Road police station SHO, Mahendra Singh told reporters that police have started the investigation against the ASI and further action will be taken after the completion of the same. The woman said that seven years back she got divorce from her husband due to personal feuds and after that she was staying with her daughter here alone, Singh said. Later, the accused, a friend of her husband, used to frequently visit her residence and raped her on several occasions in the last seven years. Further probes into the case are on, the SHO added. Zambian arrested with drugs

New Delhi: A Zambian air traveller was on Saturday arrested at the international airport here for allegedly trying to smuggling out drugs worth Rs one crore. The incident happened last night when a CISF check squad suspected the movement of the Zambian identified as Phiri Eliajah (29) at the terminal 3 of the IGIA. He was arrested just before he was about to board a flight to Dubai. During checking, the security officials recovered 10-kg of narcotic drug called Methaqualon from his baggage. Eliajah had arrived in Indian on July 2 and was on a tourist visa. The estimated value of the drug is about Rs one crore in the black market. The passenger was handed over to the Customs officials for further legal action, a CISF official said. (PTI)

Woman sets herself ablaze

Kanpur: A woman died when she set herself on fire after a heated argument with her daughter-in-law, who also died in an attempt to save her in Chakeri area here, police said today. There used to be frequent fights between Kamla (65) and her daughter-in-law Suman (30). Yesterday when both of them were alone at home, they had an argument following which the mother-in-law set herself on fire, a police spokesman said. When the daughter-in-law rushed to save her, she also got trapped in the fire and later they both died in Ursula district hospital here during treatment, said police. The bodies have been sent for post mortem and police is further investigating the case, they said. (PTI)

Bride and Groom Exhibition begins

New Delhi: The 15th Edition of the Bride and Groom Exhibition, which has a string of exhibitors from the country and abroad, commenced here Saturday. The three-day exhibition has over 100 participants from India, Pakistan, Thailand, Dubai and Australia. “Being the first wedding and lifestyle exhibition of the season, we try our best to bring the widest collection of apparels, accessories, jewellery and other wedding related services,” Kiran Sharma, organiser of the exhibition, said in a statement.
