SHILLONG: The highhandedness of Army personnel in Shillong does not seem to be subsiding at all as another act of misuse of power on the part of army personnel has been reported from the city.

A group of drunken personnel from Assam Regiment on Saturday evening assaulted three traffic staffs including a traffic personnel of Madanriting police station at Assam Bazaar, Happy Valley.

East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang informed that the traffic personnel at Assam Bazar had actually clamped a vehicle of a lady when a group of drunken Assam Regimental personnel intervened and assaulted the traffic police.

“They pushed the traffic personnel and the lady too,” Kharkrang said.

As per the information from Madanriting police station, the three traffic sleuths who were assaulted by army personnel were identified as H Kharmalki, BK Chettri and R Saha.

Soon after the incident, police picked up one Rifleman K Gurung (22) for assaulting the traffic sleuths.

According to police, surprisingly, one of the captain identified as captain Vikrant along with one major and eight-ten armed army personnel came to Madanriting police station and forcibly took away K Gurung who was picked up by police for assaulting traffic sleuths.

East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang informed that the police will file a case against the army personnel and an FIR has also been lodged against the accused army personnel.

This is not the first instance when Army personnel have indulged in high handedness as few months back two Army personnel, including a colonel had even went to the extent of stealing the clamp which was put on their vehicle for wrong parking.
