Buildings demolished to free encroachment
Itanagar: In an effort to free the government land of encroachers within the RoW (Right of Way) of sector roads and desisting construction of buildings within four meters of government quarters, the Capital Complex district administration carried out another demolition drive here. One demolition was carried out yesterday on a part of multi-storied private building which has been partially constructed within the RoW of a sector road near RD office, Itanagar while another was carried out on a part of private building constructed within 4 meters of government quarter at G-Sector, here. The district administration in coordination with the Housing department has already carried out a survey of all the encroachers of government quarters in selected sectors in Itanagar. (PTI)
Two arrested for extortion in
IRB uniform
Itanagar: Two persons wearing uniform of India Reserve Battalion (IRB) were arrested while conducting MVI checking and extorting money from civilians near Lekhi village on Friday night. Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by head constable Chukhu Tadap of Nirjili police outpost rushed to the spot and arrested Lokam George and Vishal Sengupta, police said here on Sunday. A case was registered with the Naharlagun police station and investigation launched by investigation officer SI Suresh Singh. The duo was produced before a local magistrate here yesterday who ordered them to seven days’ police remand, Capital SP Surender Kumar said. (PTI)
Wild buffalo leave six injured
in Tripura
Agartala: A violent wild buffalo left at least six people, seriously injuredat Monarchak area under Sonamura of West Tripura. Police said besides, attacking villagers including women the on Saturday, buffalo ran amok down the crowded street before being killed. The young male buffalo ran wild for about three hours over nearly two miles in the bordering village. People ran for their lives when the animal jumped into the road and when the animal leapt over the road and chased people, including young children, police stated, adding that as many as six people were gored in the back. The animal was corralled in the nearby ground, where it took two soldiers and bullets to finally bring it down. Authorities still don’t know where the buffalo came from and why it went wild. (UNI)
Shops gutted by fire in Imphal
Imphal: Eight shops were gutted by a fire that broke at Thangal Bazar here on Saturday night. The exact cause of fire was not known however it was suspected that the fire could have been escalated by LPG which were stored in the shops. Loud sounds of blasts were heard immediately after the fire spread out. Fire tender officials said all the available vehicles at the headquarters were used to douse the fire. The shops were dealing with electronic, plywood, stationery items. No one was however injured in the fire. It was estimated that goods worth crores of rupees were burnt to cinder. (UNI)
Tusker electrocuted
Jorhat: A 12-year-old male elephant was electrocuted when it came in contact with an open high power electric transformer near a tea estate in Assam’s Nagaon district, forest officials said on Saturday. The tusker was moving about in the Lusai labour line of nearby Salna Tea Estate when it came in contact with an open 1100-kv electric transformer and was electrocuted on Friday. The animal had strayed out of the Salna forest. (PTI)
Jorhat Science Centre and Planetarium inaugurated
Jorhat: The Jorhat science centre and planetarium were inaugurated by Union Culture Minister Chandresh Kumari Katoch on Saturday. The centre, which is spread over 1500 sq m and built at a coast of Rs five crore on the banks of historic Rajmo Pukhuri (tank) was dedicated to the people of Assam by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in the presence of the union minister. The science centre is the 44th in the country and would provide experiment-based learning ambience for the school children to inculcate a spirit of enquiry, foster creative talent and develop scientific temper in the community as a whole, she said. The science centers are the only means for sharing knowledge and to make it more interesting for students and common people, specially the rural masses and mothers, Katoch said adding a revolution in science and technology had started in the country based on first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s dream of a modern India. The science centre and the planetarium here are the second in Assam and were conceived, designed and developed by National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), union ministry of culture with support from the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council of the state government. The science centre has galleries on the story of oil deposits and extraction in addition to a digital planetarium, a Science Park and activities for students. (PTI)
