Dr KK Paul takes oath as M’laya Governor

SHILLONG: Former Delhi police chief and ex-member of the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC), Dr Krishan Kant Paul took oath as the 13th Governor of Meghalaya on Monday.

The new Governor was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya, Justice T Meena Kumari at a function here at the Raj Bhavan, in the presence of a distinguished panel of guests including Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, Speaker AT Mondal, leader of Opposition Dr Donkupar Roy, Cabinet members, legislators and others.

Addressing the gathering after the swearing in ceremony, Dr Paul asserted that he would uphold the highest traditions of his post and assured to dedicate himself to the service of the people of Meghalaya.

Expressing his happiness at being appointed as the Governor of Meghalaya, Dr Paul pointed out that Meghalaya is endowed with huge untapped natural resources and is acknowledged as the Eastern gateway of India’s Look East Policy making it the focal point in the country’s policy formulations.

The Governor stressed on the need for development but cautioned that there was a need to balance the development so as not to disturb the harmony between man and nature.

Referring to Meghalaya as a State with tremendous potential, the Governor said the State’s green cover, water resources, mineral wealth, bracing climate and the capabilities of the people here can energize the dynamics of the State economy.

The Governor spoke on the need for maintaining peace, a pre requisite for growth and prosperity. “We need to facilitate a conducive social environment, to enable the willing participation of all sections of society, for inclusive development,” he said.
