Kamakhya Temple security beefed up in aftermath of Bodhgaya terror strike

Guwahati: Security in and around Kamakhya Temple located atop Nilachal Hills here has been beefed up on Monday as precautionary measure in the wake of terror attack on Bodhgaya shrine on Sunday.

For the first time armed police personnel have been deployed inside the main gate of the ancient shakti shrine that is visited every day by hundreds of pilgrims for all over the country. A senior police official informed that the existing security apparatus in and around Kamakhya Temple had been geared up in the wake of Bodhgaya terror strike.

The existing security apparatus in the temple and its surroundings have been supervised by a senior police official on Monday and following the supervision some changed have been made to the existing arrangement to gear up the vigil in and around the temple.

The official said besides deployment of armed and non-armed police contingents, electronic monitoring through CCTV cameras had also been geared up.

A number of CCTV cameras are in installation in and around the ancient shrine that has been so far left unaffected by the spells of insurgency in the region. Armed Assam Police personnel and CRPF men have been deployed in and around the famous temple that is visited by thousands every day coming from various parts of the country.

All the devotees are being frisked at the entrance to the temple premises for security reasons while all the routes to the temple located atop a hill in the city are being scanned.

Besides armed and unarmed police contingents, more that 50 private security guards engaged by the temple management committee, volunteers keep round the clock vigil on the temple and its surroundings. Nilachal Hills Nagarik Surakshya Samity also extends its cooperation in maintenance of proper vigil in the area.

Meanwhile, Secretary of Kamakhya Temple management committee Nava Kanta Sarma commented that it was necessary to secure the Nilachal Hill areas have to secure Kamakhya Temple as well as four other temples located atop the same hill.

The temple dotted Nilachal Hills can be accessed through four pedestrian roads and one motorable road.
