SHILLONG: The anti-narcotics task force of the State police arrested a Assam Rifles personnel Nazir Khan along with his wife Mumtaz Begum for illegally possessing heroin.

The task force arrested the duo from Thembasuk, Mandaryting area of the city on Tuesday night.

Informing this here on Wednesday, Superintendent of Police (Shillong city) Vivek Syiem said that police seized 101 grams of heroin worth Rs 10 lakh from the residence of the couple.

The duo has been booked under section 21 (c) of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. A local court on Wednesday remanded them to three days of police custody. Syiem said the couple, who hail from Manipur’s Bishnupur district, were picked up after the police were tipped off of their possessing huge cache of powdery substances, which were later tested positive for heroin. Khan, who is posted in Imphal, was on leave and visiting his wife, who stays in Shillong.

According to police, interrogation is on to find out the source of the narcotic substances seized and their business partners besides their modus operandi in the capital.

Syiem informed that the latest seizure of heroin was the highest in the city so far and the second highest seizure was in January this year when 66 grams of heroin was seized. Meanwhile, Assam Rifles Spokesman Lt Col Rawat informed that a departmental proceeding would be initiated against Khan.
