MLA beats up escort vehicle driver

SHILLONG: In another case of growing high-handedness among the elected representatives in the State, an independent MLA on Tuesday thrashed the drive (civilian) of his escort vehicle after he lost his way in Guwahati.

The culprit this time is Ashahel D Shira, who represents Rajabala constituency in Garo Hills.

Incident took place when the drive Banteilang Rynjah, who was escorting the MLA in a requisitioned vehicle from the air port, by mistake took a turn towards Paltan Bazar instead of going to Meghalaya House in Rehabari area.

When contacted, Rynjah on Wednesday said that he was caught by surprise when Shira got out of his vehicle and started assaulting him.

“Not only the legislator, even his PSO and one of his followers assaulted me,” Rynjah said adding that there were four occupants including a woman in the MLA’s vehicle.

Rynjah, meanwhile, lodged a formal complaint with East Khasi Hills SP, M Kharkrang on Wednesday seeking action against the erring MLA.

Kharkrang, in turn, has assured the victim of a thorough inquiry into the incident. “After the inquiry, if a case is to be registered then the matter will be forwarded to the competent authority in Assam as the incident took place in Guwahati,” Kharkrang said.

In 2000, Shira was arrested for having links with the erstwhile Garo rebel outfit Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC).
