Miscreants target ambulance
NONGPOH: Despite the district administration’s assurances of providing security to vehicles plying along the Shillong-Guwahati National Highway during RBYF-called night road blockade that began on Thursday night, reports of stray incidents of stone pelting and hurling of petrol bombs were received from several parts of the district.
The night road blockade has been called by the Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF) in protest against the Government’s alleged indifference in reinstating two casual employees Hundalin Warjri and Subita Lapang in the MUDA office at Byrnihat.
Incidents of stone pelting were reported from Pahamlapong, Mawdiangum, Umsning, Pahamrioh and Dulongnar areas of the district.
According to sources, a truck overturned near the State Bank of India (SBI) office at Umsning after unidentified miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at it. Miscreants targeted another truck at Pahamrioh.
According to Ri Bhoi Superintendent of Police CVS Reddy, perpetrators of this crime have been identified and a case would be registered against them under Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act.
There were also reports of burning of tyres at 15th Mile, Byrnihat.
Meanwhile, some unidentified miscreants pelted stones on an ambulance (ML-04A- 2962) carrying a patient at Pahamrioh. No one was injured in the incident.
Earlier, the Ri Bhoi district administration assured police protection to vehicles plying along the Guwahati-Shillong road during the night road blockade. The district administration has already imposed Section 144 CrPC prohibiting any obstruction to vehicular movements in view of the two-night-long road blockade.
Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Akashdeep informed that security had been beefed up all along the highway and patrolling had been intensified.
Meanwhile, Ri Bhoi SP CVS Reddy informed that seven platoons of State police were manning the entire national highway to ensure that no untoward incident takes place during the night road blockade. (With inputs from our reporter)
