Editor,

Reading the headlines, ‘Three militants lynched in Garo Hills’ in your esteemed daily made me think it is high time people took the law in their hands by dealing with these so called militants and giving them a taste of their own medicine. The angry villagers lynched the three militants out of disgust at their arm-twisting methods. Sometimes it is shameful to read about the situation in Garo Hills where ordinary citizens are harassed by militants. However, on second thoughts I also feel they should have been handed over to the law enforcing authorities because no matter how blood-stained a person’s record is he/she has the right to an advocate and the right to be tried legally in court.

Govt should take a call on Assembly site

Editor,

Between the year 2001 and 2013 is a gap of 12 (thirteen) years. This may not sound like a long time to the Govt. but the public is really ashamed at the Govt’s attitude towards the Assembly construction project which has got stuck with site selection. A number of sites were proposed by the High Powered Committee constituted by the Govt. and rejected on one plea or the other, the latest being the “Tara Ghar” complex where the Govt. was bent upon destroying the eco- system as well as the scenic beauty of the area. Nobody knows how much burden was put on the state exchequer till today on account of these misadventures.

In my opinion the old site at Khyndailad is the most suitable as it will save public money since the foundation is already in place. The site will be easily accessible even without a vehicle because it is a walking distance away from the Secretariat. If the site is selected at a distant place there will be extra expenditure on POL. If the Govt is not in a favour of the present site then it should convert the premises into a park, multi-storied parking space, open air auditorium etc., which will add to the beauty of Khyndailad. I have expressed my views as a concerned citizen and hope that similar views are aired by other concerned citizens and NGO’s.

Yours etc.,
