NONGSTOIN: An awareness programme conducted by the District Water and Sanitation Mission (DW&SM) was held at Mawshynrut C&RD Block on Friday.

The meeting was attended by A Lyngkhoi, Member Secy of the DW&SM, Witting Mawsor MLA Mawshynrut AC and KP Pangniang MLA Rambrai AC.

Witting Mawsor said that the Total Sanitation Campaign was now known as Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan. Under the scheme, both APL and BPL families were covered.

He mentioned that it was sad that last year while hundreds of villages in West Khasi Hills were awarded with the TSC awards, not a single village from Mawshynrut C&RD Block received the award. He also informed that this year 33 villages were selected for the award and an inspection team from the central government would soon come to select the winners. Mawsor said he was confident that at least 50-60% of the villages selected would win the award.

KP Pangniang said that out of the 322 villages in Mawshynrut only 33 were selected for the award. He hoped that next year more villages would be selected for the award. He said that the govt sanctions Rs10000 a household for constructing a toilet in every village across the country.

A Lyngkhoi said that he was happy to see the initiatives taken by the two MLAs and said the BDOs efforts for maintaining cleanliness were also commendable.
