SHILLONG: The arrested GNLA chairman Champion R Sangma has served a legal notice on a local English daily (not The Shillong Times) for publishing a “derogatory news report with an intention to defame him”.

In the legal notice, which was issued through his legal counsel to the publisher of the newspaper on Monday, Sangma demanded the newspaper to publish an unconditional public apology.

In the news report, it was alleged that the GNLA chairman got access to a cell phone and was making over 1,000 calls every month from the jail.

It was also reported that Champion was having access to a female ward of the jail.
