SHILLONG: Laitkroh MDC Carmel Sohtun along with several traditional heads on Monday met Governor Dr KK Paul to request him to withhold his assent to the KHADC Autonomous District (Constitution of District Councils) Rules, 2013, which was passed by the Council recently.

The delegation also submitted a memorandum in this regard citing reasons as to why they were opposing the move of the Council.

“I have pointed out before the Governor on the failure of the KHADC to involve the various stakeholders including the traditional heads while carrying out the exercise to delimitate the Council constituencies,” Sohtun told reporters after meeting.

“I have also highlighted that the Council had passed the Bill without following mandatory exercise which was followed by the Election Commission before delimiting the Assembly constituencies in the State,” Laitkroh MDC said.

When ask about the proposal of the Government to constitute a Delimitation Commission to delimitate the constituencies of Autonomous Districts Councils (ADCs), he said, “I welcome this move because the constitution of the commission means that an extensive exercise would be carried out before taking a final call to delimitate the constituencies.”

Earlier, the KHADC Autonomous District (Constitution of District Councils) Rules, 2013, which seeks to delimit several constituencies, was passed during the reassembled Summer Session of the Council.

Laitkroh MDC along with Jaiaw KHNAM MDC Adelbert Nongrum had even staged a walk-out protesting the move.

The dejected Laitkroh MDC even crumbled the copy of the bill since he felt that he cannot accept this attempt by the Council to insult the sentiments of the people of Laitkroh by breaking up the various areas under the constituency into pieces.

With the proposed delimitation, the areas falling under Laitkroh constituency have been attached to various MDC constituencies like Mylliem, Langkyrdem and Sohra.
