TURA: West Garo Hills police raided a hideout of one of the area commanders of the banned GNLA in Selsella region and seized arms and explosives after a brief firefight on Monday night.

Police raided the GNLA hideout at Duduret area of Selsella and exchanged fire with an unknown number of militants who later fled the camp. From the place of encounter police seized a pistol, hand grenade, 200 grams of explosive, 2 magazines and thirty rounds of ammunition.

Four demand note pads of GNLA along with a promotion letter to the rank of Lance Corporal addressed to Jackfruit Ch Momin by GNLA chief Sohan D Shira was also seized during the raid.

He had recently been appointed as area commander for Selsella while another hardcore member Baichung Momin was appointed commander of the Western region.

The GNLA lance corporal, who goes by the name of Jack, was earlier the finance secretary of the outfit, police claim.

On the same night, Tura police also arrested four over ground workers of the outfit identified as Tengsan A Sangma (35), Illhomes Ch Sangma (19) of Selsella, Amseng B Marak (20) of Darengre and Sengman T Sangma (25) of Darengre.

Tura police say that the arrested four were working under the directions of both Baichung and Jack.

Grenade hurled in Dainadubi: In another incident, suspected militants hurled a grenade at the Taxation office of Meghalaya Government at Dainadubi in North Garo Hills on Tuesday night. There were no casualties.

The explosive was thrown from outside the compound of the taxation office and exploded but there were no damages, Resubelpara police said.

“It was probably a stun grenade lobbed by some miscreants,” informed district police chief Ricky Dkhar.

ANVC (B) cadres arrested: Meanwhile, three ANVC (B) cadres were arrested by Rongjeng police in East Garo Hills on Monday night for their alleged involvement in extortion. The arrested cadres were identified as Dinbirth Sangma (23) of Resu Rongchikol, Rolling G Momin of Gajing and Kanwar Momin (25) of Songsak.
